ARTIST BIO

Bleu Django is Indiana’s premier Romani jazz string combo. Its instrumentation (violin, 3 guitars, bass) pays tribute to a unique musical group created in Paris, France, over 80 years ago: the Quintette du Hot Club de France featuring legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt and acclaimed jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli.

Since its inception at the turn of the century, Bleu Django has performed throughout Indiana at venues ranging from jazz clubs and festivals to concert hall, libraries, colleges and universities.

Its members are Daryl Jones, lead guitar (Monrovia); Bob Foster, rhythm guitar (Noblesville); Michael Davis, rhythm guitar (Indianapolis); Carolyn Dutton, violin (Nashville); and Ron Kadish, bass (Bloomington).

The band’s repertoire includes traditional jazz and swing tunes by composers ranging from Duke Ellington to Cole Porter to Jerome Kern as well as many of the Hot Club’s original tunes written by Reinhardt and Grappelli. Of all the styles of jazz music to emerge in the 20th century, none is more passionate, more exhilaratingly up-tempo, or more steeped in an outsider tradition than gypsy jazz. It combines the sweet swinging style of Louis Armstrong’s trumpet, the romantic strains of Romany violin, and the fire of Flamenco guitar. Bleu Django’s mission is to introduce music lovers to this musical genre by replicating the stylistic flair of the original quintet as closely as possible. The result is upbeat, lively, infectious – and will transport listeners back to an irresistible era in jazz history.
